Shear banding as a dissipative structure from a thermodynamic viewpoint

چکیده

Granular materials are now known to be an illustration of complex as they display emergent macroscopic properties when loaded. An initially homogenous response can bifurcate into a heterogeneous one with the appearance rich variety structured kinematical patterns. The shear banding that ensues illustrates symmetry-breaking transition multiple choices behaviours, common feature dynamical systems. Even though phenomenon has been studied for decades, this regime remains mostly mysterious in geomaterials, no convincing arguments could link it underlying microscopic mechanisms. paper investigates issue by invoking fundamental minimum entropy production theorem established Prigogine past century seek any connection second-order work theory mechanics failure. A general equation linking derivatives mechanical system is thus inferred, which leads thermodynamic interpretation bifurcations failure behaviour granular under given loading. This verified through discrete element simulations highlight role played elastic energy stored within material before bifurcation occurs, also corresponds minimization production. analysis suggests new intriguing emergence ordered dissipative structures germane nonequilibrium thermodynamics open

Cosmology with Varying Constants from a Thermodynamic Viewpoint

We study the variation of fundamental constants in cosmology while dealing with thermodynamic aspects of gravity. We focus on the variation of the speed of light, c, and Newton’s gravitational constant, G, with respect to cosmic time. We find the constraints on the possible variation of these constants by comparing varying constants of cosmological models with the latest observational data.

Adiabatic Shear Banding in a Bimetallic Body

Thermomechanical deformations of a body made of two different materials and undergoing simple shearing deformations are studied with the objectives of finding out when and where adiabatic shear bands will initiate and how they will subsequently grow. Each material is modeled as strain and strain-rate hardening but thermally softening. A shear band is presumed to have formed if the introduction ...

Thermodynamic dual structure of linear-dissipative driven systems.

It is often assumed that maximization of the statistical entropy cannot account for the spontaneous emergence of currents or compositional heterogeneity associated with them, and that other principles involving entropy production (its maximization or minimization) must be invoked to explain the emergence and robustness of the order in driven dissipative systems. I show for a class of simple mod...
